New Balls Please!

One of the joys of Wimbledon is the commentary of John McEnroe. He's come a long way from the petulant young man who used to rant and rave his way through tennis tournaments, and who looked like a skinny scarecrow.

       

He even smiles a lot these days and seems to have matured into a good looking bloke who knows his stuff.

       

So, with these two sides of McEnroe's character in mind, I can't decide whether I was or wasn't surprised to hear of his five-step plan to improve tennis. (Or even if.... he can or cannot be serious!)

Mac's thinking is that you can look at tennis in two ways. One is that tennis has been brilliant over the last ten years or so with some of the best ever players, or two, that the same four men keep winning over and over again and it's getting a bit dull. The four men he alludes to are, of course, Federer, Djokovic, Nadal and Murray. His plan is to make tennis more exciting and edgier by....

1. Having no umpires and no linespeople. 

2. No warm ups.

3. No towels.

4. No 25 second rule for slow servers.

5. No high fives.

I have to say that the most sensible one of these is number five. McEnroe is referring to double matches where to quote the man himself, "I'm so sick and tired of everyone high-fiving no matter what happens. It should only be allowed when something good happens. But that's just my opinion."

I can't say I could see number one working, matches would descend into chaos. I think Mac just wants to get rid of umpires for his own reasons! As for numbers two and three....surely that's just cruel. And were the 25 second rule is concerned....Nadal for one would probably explode if he couldn't do his little routine at the start of every serve! During Rafa's match today with Lukas Rosol the rule was blatantly broken several times by Nadal with no censure, causing Rosol to ask if there was a different rule for Rafa!
